“Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” - Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said on 14 April, 2008 he would strongly oppose an initiative to outlaw same-sex marriage if it qualifies for the November ballot.

“First of all I think that it will never happen in California because I think that California people are much further along with that issue, and number two, I’ll always be there to fight against that,” the governor said to thunderous people in San Diego at the convention of the Log Cabin Republicans, a national gay Republican organization.

Schwarzenegger called the new initiative “a waste of time” and predicted it would be defeated if it makes the ballot.
Geoff Kors, executive director of Equality California, an advocacy organization for gay rights issues, pronounced himself “thrilled” at Schwarzenegger’s comments. “To have Governor Schwarzenegger come out so strongly against this constitutional amend men would have a strong impact if it qualifies for the November,” Kors said. Kors added that he was shocked by the governor’s forceful stand.

Famous and well-known conservative blogger Jon Fleischman called it inconsistent that Schwarzenegger would oppose the initiative after vetoing same-sex marriage bills. “At best, we have another off-the-cuff remark from the governor that his staff will have to spin back into the bottle. Or, at worst, you can add another log to the ‘what I said on the campaign trail doesn’t matter now’ fire,” Fleischman wrote on his FlashReport blog.

Aaron McLear, Schwarzenegger press secretary, said the governor had not changed his mind. “The governor has been clear and consistent when it comes to the issue of same-sex marriage that the matter is currently in the hands of the California Supreme Court and he will respect the court’s decision whatever it may be,” McLear said.

Protectors of the initiative are waiting for April 28, they trying to collect 694,354 voter signatures needed to qualify for the ballot
