Italy is Planning a Referendum on Abolition of Parlor House Prohibition

September 4th, 2008

It has been less that 50 years after the adoption of Merlin Law (prohibiting parlor houses in Italy) when an initiative group applies in the Court of Appeal for its abortion. The initiative group is leaded by Daniela Santanchè – a former Prime Minister candidate.

Santanchè says that after 50 years of the law regulations it should be reconsidered as to provide to the citizens streets being free-of-escorts, and guarantee to the Italian escorts freedom in terms of managing their own business without anybody interfering and sharing their profits.
The Parliament in force of the 16th calling is to consider 8 drafts regulating the activity of Italian escorts, 5 drafts less than was considered by the Parliament of the former, 15th calling. None of them was eventually accepted.

Traditionally Italian law makers are split into 2 uncompromising camps: advocates of the full legitimacy of the escorting and advocates of the “zero tolerance”. Santanchè’s referendum offers a most drastic variant: Not only to abort illegal status of escorting but to re-open parlor houses. Santanchè stated in one of the interviews that streets of Italy were filled with opportunities of hiring an escort and it is high time to re-open parlor houses in Italy. Her calling was supported by 90 % of respondents of SKY television channel.

P.S. In 1958 when parlor houses were prohibited their number reached 560, where 27000 Italian escorts worked.
